Ord Valley Aboriginal Health Service

The Social Support Unit (SSU) is part of the Ord Valley Aboriginal Health Services (OVAHS) which provides comprehensive PHC services to the people of Kununurra and surrounding areas. One of the primary, but not exclusive, focus of SSU is in supporting people with issues related to alcohol and/or other drugs. The SSU works closely with OVAHS clinical staff and other local services.

Services provided

OVAHS Services: 

• Primary health care services
• Preventative and public health programs; maternal and child health, women’s health, chronic disease, renal health, and sexual health.
• Remote clinics
  

SSU Services:

• AOD counselling, support, and referrals for individuals and families.
• AOD and SEWB groups
• Smoking Cessation
• Mental health assessment and treatment
• General counselling and support including grief and loss, domestic violence, relationship issues and PTSD
• Foetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) program; educating the community about the effects of drinking during pregnancy

Target Groups

• All Indigenous people of the Ord Valley area in the East Kimberley. Non-Indigenous people over the age of 16 years are also able to access the service.
